Niagara Mohawk Power of central New York has a power generating facility on Salmon River.
It owned all the land around the reservoir. But, the property tax bill got too expensive, so they donated all the land to the state of New York.
With all that property off the tax rolls, the local residents had to pick up the difference. Their tax bills went thru the roof!
One local land owner says she pays more property taxes on her undeveloped corner lot near the reservoir than she pays for her home and 20 acres down in Texas!
