The cost of medical care is escalating all around the country. New York State is no exception.

So, with this too, is rising the cost of Medicaid.

Counties in New York State are mandated by state goverment to pay a portion of their medicaid costs. They only have sales taxes and property taxes for raising revenue. Consequently, these taxes become more of a burden with the higher medical costs.

So, what to do?

One seemingly small thing that could be done to help is to put caps on medical malpractice awards. This in all actuality would be a giant step in reducing medical costs.

Doctors who's fee is $250 for a small operation must pay $300 insurance premium for the operation. The patient, or medicaid, gets billed $550.
That fee/premium ratio seems way out of proportion.

Other states have tried capping medical malpractice awards, and have been able to keep medical cost under control.

The time has come to do the same in New York State.

Trial lawyers won't like it, but it's time some of them got a "real" job.
